Roncalli Student Collins Receives Kiwanis Award

Roncalli senior Brayden Collins was named to the Kiwanis Circle of Valor at the 51st annual Abe Lincoln Awards on Friday, February 13. The program celebrates students who have overcome adversity while achieving success. Brayden was one of only 24 area high school seniors to receive the Kiwanis Club of

Indianapolis Abe Lincoln Award.

The Abe Lincoln Scholarship Program was created in 1976 to recognize students who have overcome significant hardships and to provide financial assistance as they pursue their future goals. Kiwanis aims to guide young people by fostering a community that cares for, recognizes and encourages them.

Brayden was selected for this award in recognition of his battle with leukemia, as he was diagnosed in the summer of 2024 and his continued determination to succeed. He plans to attend Marian University this fall, where he intends to study business or finance, or pursue sports management and marketing.

Joining Brayden at the ceremony, in addition to his family, school counselor and principal, were several people he credits as key supporters throughout his journey. Among them was his first nurse, Amelia Herbert, who has been by his side since the beginning. “I have always trusted her, and over time she has

begun to feel more like an older sister than a nurse,” Brayden said. “She always pushed me to get up and move, made sure I was never nervous, and knew how to make me laugh and feel comfortable in times of discomfort and stress. She is amazing.” He also recognized Lori Taylor (Roncalli 1999), the mother of one

of his best friends, saying, “She has been there for me since day one and made countless sacrifices to make sure I am happy and cared for. She treats me as her own son, and I feel like part of her family.” Brayden also thanked classmate and close friend Charlie Dugan. “He always knows how to make me laugh, and he

is someone I can be around 24/7 and never get bored. He and his family have done so much for me, and I am grateful for all of them.”

Angela Maly, school counselor at Roncalli, commented, “Brayden has faced his challenges with remarkable courage, leaning on his faith, the support of friends and family and the strength of his community. His resilience and positive spirit are truly inspiring and make him so deserving of this recognition.”
