Today, I am bringing you another organization close to my heart, Girls Nite In.
In 2008, public school teacher Jimmelynn Garland Rice began intentionally taking her breaks in the girls’ restroom, rather than the faculty lounge, knowing that the restroom is often a girl’s safe place, either to be vulnerable or when she is hurting. She loved girls through pregnancy fears, bullying, purging, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, addiction, and abusive family members.
Middle school students, high school students, and college students gather during Girls Nite In for a free meal and to discuss difficult and relevant topics, including self-worth, divorce, sex, addiction, blended families, and more. GNI provides a safe space with trained mentors (including yours truly) to be an extra adult in each child’s life that supports them, empowers them, believes in them, and loves them.
My co-mentor, Jaymee, and I lead a middle school group. We love seeing our girls and plan special summer events for them while GNI is not in session. This summer, we had an ice cream social and a “vision board” night, where girls planned their goals for the upcoming school year.
