Falling for October: My Favorite Bucket List Traditions

October is my favorite month of the year, and I love to celebrate by coming up with a fun fall bucket list! Take some ideas for yourself to celebrate with your loved ones.

1) Go on a hayride at Beasley’s Orchard

Beasley’s Orchard celebrates fall in style, featuring a hayride, apple picking, farm markets, corn mazes, apple cannons, and many fall festivals. Upcoming festivals include:

Oct 11-12: Heartland Apple Festival

Oct 18-19: Dog Days at the Maze

Oct 25-26: Halloweekend

Nov 1-2: Dia De Los Muertos

For more information, visit their website at www.beasleys-orchard.com/.

2) Pick pumpkins at Hogan Farms

Hogan Farms, located in Brownsburg, features a pumpkin patch of locally grown pumpkins and gourds. Pumpkin types include mini pumpkins, pie pumpkins, specialty pumpkins and white pumpkins and vary in price between $2-$20. There is also a corn maze that is pumpkin and skeleton themed. For more information, visit their website at www.brownsburgcornmaze.com/.

3) See the scarecrows on Danville Town Square

The Danville Scarecrow Festival is one of our favorite family traditions. From late September through the end of October, the town square is filled with scarecrows decorated by local businesses, organizations, and sponsors. Prize money is rewarded for the best scarecrow, and the winner is announced at the Scares on the Square festival. More information about this festival can be found on Facebook.

4) Try a new dessert

When fall time starts, our family buys out the pumpkin puree from local grocery stores. We enjoy trying new pumpkin recipes, including pumpkin bundt cake, butternut squash soup, and my family’s favorite, my famous pumpkin bread recipe.

5) Walk at Echo Hollow Nature Park

My family loves to walk at the Echo Hollow Nature Park. This park, previously known as Sodalis, is a beautiful nature park located in Plainfield. This park focuses on promoting biodiversity, especially the preservation of habitats for the federally protected Indiana bat. While you are there, try leaf peeping, which is the activity of traveling to observe and photograph beautiful fall foliage.
