Did you make it to the Hendricks County 4-H Fair this past week? Or, maybe your family makes an annual trip (or two or three, like ours) to the State Fair? Even the fanciest foodies can agree that there are some darn good eats at fairs! They might not always be the healthiest choices, but sometimes the heart wants what it wants. Here are some recipes you can make with your family to re-live your fondest fair food memories from home!
Grilled Corn on the Cob
There are many ways people like to cook corn on the cob, from the stovetop to an insulated cooler. My favorite is on the grill! I clean several ears of their silks, rub them in softened butter, and sprinkle them with garlic powder, dried parsley, and ground pepper. (I don’t add salt because the butter we use is salted, but that’s personal choice.) Wrap them in a piece of tin foil, and pop them on your grill for about 20 minutes, turning every 5 or so. They’ll come out nice and tender with a little char for extra flavor.
Corn Dogs
They really are just two ingredients (minus the stick): cornbread batter and hot dogs. You’ll need a deep-fryer or Dutch oven to fry them up. Here are two recipes: one that uses a homemade batter, and one that features a well-known mix.
Funnel Cake
SHOCKER: Funnel cake isn’t really cake, but who cares? It’s delicious and actually fairly simple. You’ll likely have all the ingredients you need in your kitchen. Here is a well-reviewed recipe from a site I turn to pretty often!
Grilled Turkey Legs
I know Indiana is tenderloin country, but this fair favorite doesn’t need to be fried! Brine some legs and toss them on the grill for a delicious main dish.
