A Child’s Dream Sparks Malik’s Blankets for the Homeless

Malik’s Blankets for the Homeless was founded by David Chaney and his six-year-old son, Malik Ford, in 2021.

The organization began after Malik completed a first-grade school project while learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “I Have a Dream”. When asked what his dream was, Malik shared that he wanted to help the homeless.

“Having just found my own relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and while going through rehabilitation at the VA in Dayton, Ohio, I felt compelled to do whatever I could to help make Malik’s dream a reality. I sat down with him and started a simple conversation and asked, “What do you want to do for the homeless?” Without hesitation, he replied, “I want to give out blankets.” At that moment, Malik’s Blankets for the Homeless was born” said Chaney.

What started as a father-and-son act of kindness has since grown into a full-fledged 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, rooted in faith, service, and love for the community. Malik’s Blankets focuses on direct outreach, meeting immediate needs such as distribution of blankets and warm clothing, hot meals, hygiene kits, distribution of Bibles, and winter survival events.

“Every effort is hands-on and relational, prioritizing compassion over convenience,” shared Chaney, “The most rewarding part has been seeing hope restored in people who often feel unseen or forgotten. Simple acts, like a warm meal, a blanket, or a genuine conversation, can make a lasting impact. For me, one of the greatest rewards has been serving along with my son, Malik, teaching him compassion, empathy, and faith through real-world action.”

“Our outreach in front of the Central Library on St. Clair Street in downtown Indianapolis has become a trusted and familiar place for many. These efforts are especially meaningful because they provide not only physical warmth, but also human connection and dignity” said Chaney.

Malik’s Blankets continues to host seasonal outreach events, particularly during the cold months. For more information and to get involved, visit maliksblanketsforthehomeless.com.
